Dr. Sean Corcoran has served as Head of School at Brainerd Baptist School (BBS) since 2006, but his journey with the school began a decade earlier. In 1996, while still in college, he joined the BBS community, beginning a career that has spanned nearly three decades. Born and raised in Manchester, Tennessee, Sean is a graduate of Coffee County Central High School. After spending two years working for a large manufacturing company in Nashville, he relocated to Chattanooga to pursue a degree in elementary education.
Sean began his teaching career at Brainerd Baptist School in 1999 as a sixth-grade teacher. In 2001, the BBS middle school transitioned off campus to become David Brainerd Christian School (DBCS), where he taught a variety of subjects, including Math, Science, Bible, and Technology. He also coached basketball, golf, soccer, and football. After earning his master's degree, Sean transitioned into administration, assuming leadership responsibilities for admissions, the business office, and campus facilities. During this time, he helped lead several major campus expansion projects, including the construction of a gymnasium, a football field, and two classroom buildings.
In the spring of 2005, Sean returned to Brainerd Baptist School as Assistant Head of School and was appointed Head of School in May 2006. He later earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership and has become a passionate advocate for high-quality, child-centered independent education. Sean has presented at numerous state and national educational conferences and frequently chairs accreditation teams for independent schools through the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). He serves on several committees for the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS) and currently serves as President of its Board of Trustees. In addition, he is active in the Elementary School Heads Association (ESHA), consults with Christian schools on strategic planning, and has served as an adjunct professor teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Under Dr. Corcoran's leadership, Brainerd Baptist School has experienced significant growth in enrollment, annual giving, endowment, academic programming, faculty development, and campus facilities. During his tenure, the school has earned membership in the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and, most recently, the Council on Educational Standards and Accountability (CESA). BBS faculty are recognized for their professional leadership, regularly presenting at state, regional, and national conferences. In 2020, the school completed the largest capital project in its history, adding new classroom spaces, the HUB—which houses the Library, STEM Lab, and Learning Center—and new administrative offices. Today, the campus continues to be transformed through a comprehensive renovation plan that provides students with an innovative, engaging, and inspiring learning environment.
Sean is married to his high school sweetheart, Katrina, and together they have three children—Andrew, Aaron, and Abigail—all graduates of Brainerd Baptist School. Andrew, an electrician, is married to Zoë, and they have two children, Andi Claire and Major. Aaron is married to Erica and is a senior at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he is pursuing a degree in education. Abigail also earned her degree in elementary education from MTSU. She and her husband, Craig, have one daughter, Elizabeth Jean, and are expecting their second child later this year.
Outside of school, Sean enjoys spending time with his family, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, working in the yard, playing basketball and golf, biking, and skiing throughout the western United States. He also enjoys making trips to Knoxville with his sons to cheer on the Tennessee Volunteers football and basketball teams.
