Fifth Grade Overview

January 31, 2012

***Class Pictures are this Thursday!!  We would like for the students to wear a white shirt and khaki pants.

Bible: Psalm 121:3 - “He will not let your foot slip-he who watches over you will not slumber;” On Friday, 2/17/12, the verse test will cover Psalm 121:1-3.

Music:  Handbells will meet Wednesday. Speaking parts for Grandparent’s Day should be memorized.

Spanish:  The students have now had two spelling and English meaning tests on the “cocina” (kitchen) words.  The next set of words that they will be learning/practicing is for the “baño” (bathroom).  Their test on these words will be held on Tuesday, February 7.

Reading:  Our next F&F unit is Plot.

Outside reading requirement:  The project due date is getting closer, 2/17/12.  Please make sure your student is working to complete the book and project on time.  See the information at the end of the overview.  I have also included a rubric at the end of the project requirements so students will be aware of what is required and how much each portion is worth.  Please have your student talk to me if they are having problems coming up with ideas of items to represent their person.

 Vocabulary: None this week.

Spelling: Unit 8 Spelling test Friday, 2/3/12.

English:  We will continue the Sentence unit this week.

There will be HELP! CLASS tomorrow, 2/1/12.

Math:  On Thursday, 2/2/12, we will have a test over multiplication and division of fractions.  Students have done a great job on this and I expect good grades on this test.  Then on Tuesday, 2/7/12, we will have a multiple choice test over addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions.

Social Studies:  Students did a great job on “In Flanders Fields”.  We will finish up the WWI unit and have a test over Unit III on Wednesday, 2/8/12.  Review sheets will be sent home on Friday if students want to get started early on their studying.  The test will include a map of Europe - I will include on the review sheet the European countries they will need to locate.

Tomorrow we will start an F&F unit on Fact and Opinion in Social Studies.  Mr. Corcoran and Mr Chambers will be setting up our unit with an interesting debate. This is a short unit and will not be difficult to do along with the one Mrs. Ledbetter is doing.  The test over the information will be after Winter Break.

Biography Project

Due Date:  Friday, 2/17/12

The required outside reading assignment for this quarter is to read a biography that is about 100 pages in length, within the student’s reading zone (unless approved by Mrs. Ledbetter), and on AR.  After reading the book, students must take the AR test by Friday, 2/17/12, which will be part of the project grade.

PROJECT GUIDELINES:

Students are to dress up in clothing that would represent the person they read about.  For example, if they read a biography on George W. Bush, they might dress in a suit or a Texas Rangers jersey or a Yale t-shirt.   Students will give a two-minute monologue as if they were that person.  Index cards may be used to help the student present the monologue; however, students may not “read” directly from the cards.  Information in the monologue should include:  birth date, death date (if applicable), family, important life events, contributions in history, and pertinent historical events.  Some research may be needed in order to find enough information.  After they present the monologue they will share the items they have placed in the attached bag that represent and symbolize the person they read about.  Some items should be literal: a flag for the President, soccer ball for a soccer player, or a model plane for Orville Wright.  Some of the items should be symbolic:  a candle because Florence Nightingale was vigilant, a soccer ball for Barrack Obama because he met his goal of becoming the President of the U.S., or an Energizer battery because David Beckham keeps going and going and going.  To come up with symbolic items, students should think of character traits related to that person.  There should be 5-10 items in the bag.  Monologues and bags will be presented on Friday, 2/17/12.
