First Grade Overview

BIBLE:  Luke 6:31 – “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”   The oral verse test will be on Thursday, November 13, 2014.

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Phonics: We will be covering letter x, y, digraph –sh, and digraph –oo. Assessment Friday.

Spelling: Test on List 7 Friday:

see, red, that, this, back, sing, bring, think, green, three, *are, *from

Foundations and Frameworks: The next few weeks first grade is focusing on Referential Representation. The students will be tested on the pattern statement, process questions, and vocabulary words.

Pattern statement: It is possible to imagine things described with words.

Process questions: 1. What does this section bring to my mind?

2. How does the picture match the author’s words?

Vocabulary: pretentious, stampede, blaring, squabble, shore, dull, scoured, pigsty, seek, whirled

MATH:  This week in marvelous math we will work on paying using dimes and pennies, writing money amounts using the dollar ($) symbol, dividing wholes into halves, facts subtracting 2, tallying and drawing a picture to solve a problem.
Assessment: Assessment Friday

Assessments cover the information on worksheets your child has brought home for homework from the previous week.

Science and Social Studies:  October will be all about Africa!

REMINDERS:

A special thank you to all the parents who both turned in Box Tops for your classroom and volunteered at the Fall Festival! We appreciate your support!

Students who have earned their AR shirts may wear them untucked every Wednesday with uniform shorts, pants, or skirts.

Students may bring extra money to lunch to purchase ice cream from our 5th grade on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Prices vary depending on what item is purchased.

Wednesday ice cream is a quarter if your child has a lunchbox. It is free if your child is getting a school lunch.

Field trip forms are due tomorrow to your teacher indicating if you are OR are not planning to chaperone our trip to the Tivoli to see the “Nutcracker”.

$2 donation earns your child a Halloween colors civilian day on October 31st. NO COSTUMES.

It is starting to be chilly for our recess at 10:40 a.m. Please use your discretion and send your child a sweater or jacket if needed. Any outerwear jackets/sweaters may be worn outside to recess.
